The discovery of a suspicious object at a house in the Larne Road area sparked the alert for most of Wednesday morning.
Diversions were in the Beltoy Road with the junction of Tongue Loanen.
Army bomb experts attended the scene and made safe what was described by police as a "viable pipe bomb".
It has been taken away for further examination and all roads were re-opened around lunchtime on Wednesday.
