The discovery was made in the graveyard of St John's chapel on Tuesday afternoon.

Army bomb squad officers were tasked and a cordon was put in place around the church, which is in the Laurel Hill Road area of the Co Londonderry town.

Police said the cordon will remain in place into the early hours of Wednesday.

They added that no roads have been closed and no local residents have had to be evacuated from their homes as part of the alert.
