It comes after Mr McClarty passed away last month at the age of 63.

Ms Sudgen took her place on the Assembly benches for the first time on Tuesday and told UTV she intends to remain independent.

She explained: "It's something that David fought hard for and the people of East Londonderry stood behind him on that, so I intend to remain independent.

"The NI Assembly and the people that work in it are very welcoming so it's been a great day. I've worked here for the past six years so not so much in at the deep end.

"I just need to look out for the sharks!"
