The suspected submarine was revealed during the sonar search of the water, as teams searched for a person who had fallen into the water.

Instead, Mr Attwood said they found "what appears to be a submarine or a ship lying in relatively low water on Lough Foyle".

Londonderry was used as a naval base during World War Two and the Minister said the boat could be a war grave.

"Stay away from it," he urged.

"There may be munitions on it for all that we know. There may be bodies on board."

Mr Attwood said an assessment was being carried out to determine why and how long the vessel has been in the lough.

"It is unusual that there appears to be no record of the circumstances behind this situation.

"I have also asked that all agencies continue to work with DoE and the harbour commissioner to create certainty about the identity of and the reason why the submarine/boat is in the current location."

After looking closely at the vessel at the bottom of River Foyle. Through some researching of my own. I agree it's the right length and shape for a WWII 2Man or possibly 3Man Mini-Sub. To my observations and marks in the sonar pic's shown. It looks to be an old WWII Italian 'B' Class Mini-Sub. which was a useful bit of machinery used to travel along the bottom of deep river and sea beds, etc. being able to track or rumble over underwater anti u-boat or submarine nets used by the Nazi's in WWII. These Italian 'B' Class Mini-Subs we able to do what they did because they were fitted with 'Caterpillar Tracks' for climbing over net obstacles and underwater obstacles.

I'm gonna get real now, this could be a war grave, german families could find out what happened to their lost relatives. We could find out some futher detail of l/Derrys role in the war personally I find this very exciting if it is a lost or scuppered U-Boat
