Police are investigating the theft of a cash machine in Ballygawley, Co Tyrone.

A gang of men used a mechanical digger to steal the Northern Bank ATM in Main Street shortly after 3am on Thursday morning.

They made their getaway in a white van, leaving the digger at the scene.

According to police, the digger had been stolen from a plant hire company's premises at Dungannon Road in Ballygawley.

Police said an attempt was made to steal another mechanical digger from St Ciaran's High School in Ballygawley.

A windscreen of the machine was broken and the dashboard was damaged.

Police believe both incidents are linked.

It is the latest incident in a series of ATM robberies involving stolen diggers.

Detectives have appealed for anyone with information about any incidents to contact them.
