A large boxing ring will be erected in the waiting area of Belfast Central Station as part of a hard-hitting new campaign aimed at preventing suicides on Northern Ireland's rail network.

The charity Samaritans have teamed up with service provider Translink for the launch of the 'We're in Your Corner' scheme on Thursday.

They said there have been five suicides on railway lines and 19 attempts since 2009.

Local sporting heroes including Ulster rugby's Chris Henry and boxer Cathal McMonagle are backing the campaign to reinforce the message that support is available to those in need.

Chris Henry said: "I think it's safe to say that the majority of people's lives have in some ways, either personally or through family and friends, been touched by depression and often suicide.

"This is a problem we all, and the community as a whole, must come together and tackle as one."

Cathal McMonagle said: "It doesn't matter how big or tough we are, we all suffer our own heartaches/troubles in life, big or small.

"It's not a sign of weakness to talk about your problems, in fact it takes a bigger man to admit he has a problem and ask for help."

Campaign organisers say they are particularly targeting men, who are said to be three times more likely to take their own lives than women.

Translink says the boxing theme is being used to highlight that men in their 30s, 40s and 50s, are vulnerable - the full size ring set up in the station is to reflect this theme.

Support is also being provided for Translink employees who may find themselves in challenging and highly sensitive circumstances when dealing with someone in distress.

So far 100 rail network staff have attended.

Suzanne Costello of Samaritans said: "We know that men remain a high-risk group and we believe that they don't feel able to talk about their problems.

"These can spiral out of control, sometimes with tragic consequences. Talking to someone is better than bottling things up and we hope that the poster campaign will prompt more people to seek support.

"We're pleased to expand our partnership into Northern Ireland by working with Translink, helping Samaritans to achieve our vision that fewer people die by suicide."
