Police are investigating after a member of staff at an east Belfast petrol filling station was hit with a hammer during an armed robbery.

The incident happened just after 11pm on Friday at the business on the Gilnahirk Road.

A man entered the station and demanded money be put in a bag before he struck the male member of staff on the knee with a hammer.

The man was not seriously injured and the robber made off with a sum of cash along the Gilnahirk Road.

Police have appealed for anyone with information in connection with the robbery to contact detectives.
