A soldier due for deployment in Afghanistan has been refused bail over an alleged attack on another Army man after a band parade.
A soldier due for deployment in Afghanistan has been refused bail over an alleged attack on another Army man after a band parade.

Adam White, 18, is accused of kicking out at the victim, a member of the Irish Guards, as violence flared in a Co Armagh supermarket carpark last Saturday.

He faces a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent along with a second suspect, 20-year-old apprentice electrician Shane Russell.

The High Court heard both accused and the victim had all been on a minibus returning from a parade in Newcastle, Co Down.

It was claimed a row broke out over "inappropriate comments" about someone's girlfriend when they got out in Lurgan.

White, a member of the Royal Ordnance Corps from Damhill Road, Magheralin, Craigavon, allegedly struck the victim a number of times about the head.

According to the prosecution an imprint on the victim's head matches that of footwear worn by Russell, who was said to have an address available at Salisbury Street, Belfast.

Counsel for White confirmed his regiment was due to return to Hull, Yorkshire this week for training ahead of deployment in Afghanistan.

Russell's barrister, Fergal McCusker, told the court his client was denying the allegation.

He argued that CCTV footage from the scene showed Russell attempting to restrain others involved in the fight.

"He is not seen to be striking or causing injury to the injured party," Mr McCusker said.

After hearing the applications Lord Justice Higgins refused to release the two accused on bail.

He said: "I don't need to consider the question of addresses or what would happen to White should he return to the Army."

Russell was, however, granted a temporary period of compassionate bail.
