The men, aged between 19 and 49, were detained in the Newtownabbey, Greenisland, Carrickfergus and greater Belfast areas.

More than 100 police officers have been injured in violence that has broken out following flag protests across Northern Ireland.

There was hand-to-hand fighting in the Short Strand area of east Belfast on Saturday, amid some of the worst scenes of violence since the demonstrations against Belfast City Council's decision to limit the flying of the Union flag began.

Meanwhile, more than 30 petrol bombs and other missiles were thrown during loyalists protests in Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey last week.

On Friday evening police moved in to stop protestors from blocking roads at the Cloughfern roundabout in Newtownabbey.

In Belfast a 57-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of obstruction of a road, disorderly behaviour and assault on police in the Donegall Road area of south Belfast on Friday evening.

He is assisting police with their inquiries.

A PSNI spokesperson said 124 people have been arrested since the protests began and 88 have been charged with public order offences.
