Police at Newry alert targeted in gun attack
Shots were fired at police attending the ongoing security alert in Newry on Saturday night.

A number of officers have been at the scene after a suspicious object was discovered near the railway line between Killeen and Meigh on Friday.

It is understood the gun attack happened around 9.15pm.

There were no reports of any injuries.

In a statement from police, District Commander Chief Superintendent Alisdair Robinson condemned the attack and said:

"This attack was a cowardly attempt to kill police officers in the course of their duty as they investigate a suspicious object that may have the potential to kill or injury not only police but members of the local community"

"Police will continue to deliver a service to the community despite the threat from these criminal terrorists, but we must also be mindful of that threat," he added.

"The people who carry out these senseless acts show a total disregard for their fellow man and are not part of the society within which the majority of people of Northern Ireland wish to live," he continued.

SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley believes dissident republicans are behind this latest attack.

"It certainly looks like the device at the railway line was an attempt to lure officers in and attack them by shooting at them," he said.

"All of us must hold our nerve under these circumstances and allow police to do their work. I think the main way of defeating these people is through close co-operation between the local community and the police force," he added.

A controlled explosion was carried out on what was described as a viable explosive device discovered in a car park in Magherafelt, Co Londonderry, on Saturday.

On Friday, multiple alerts caused widespread disruption across Londonderry, Ballymena, Newry and Belfast.

The security alert in Newry continues.

Playing the incident down is an understatement. Detectives still haven't interviewed the officers involved to find out what happened. Attempted murder of police officers isn't a priority anymore.

All the authorities are saying there are only a small number of people involved in this, I for one am not so sure ! And under reporting and playing down incidents is only going to allow these people more room to work and make things more dangerous for the gradually lessening number of people left to deal with the terrorism ! 22000 soldiers and 13500 police down to 4500 police, madness ! This is not Kent and the sooner this is realised the better ! Am concerned !

It's time for everybody to work together no matter what their background is in order to get these animals into cages. Enough is enough of these activities. If they know that they will be going to jail for years it might put a damper on their spirits.

Sadly, I think this is how it is going to be for the foreseeable future. I guess it shows that the police are sometimes correct to not rush in to the scenes of devices etc, the dissidents seem to be using hoax and real devices as a lure for police, so that they can set them up for a real attack. What is so bad about the current constitutional settlement, that some people feel justified in murdering their fellow citizens?

Yet again i wait for the senior command team to play down this latest attempt to murder us. just when most of the reserve have left/leaving, meaning more police taking off the streets to cover what they were doing. Working in these high threat areas with two crews of two is just unacceptable, and most of the TSG`s now are at half their numbers. The reality is that sending us out wearing yellow coats is not going to make the streets safer, all it does is put us at risk. nothing like having a target on your back.

Why am I not surprised? These attacks have been going on for decades and I expect them to continue until the core problem is addressed, We have all noticed a huge increase in attacks such as this shooting and I don't think for 1 second that this isn't just another 'quiet before the storm'.
