Jimmy Seales, 56, from Ballykeel Road in Hillsborough was handed a 15 year minimum sentence for the murder of 36-year-old Phillip Strickland.

His co-accused Stephen McCaughey, from Shackleton Walk in Newtownards, was sentenced to a minimum of 10 years for the murder.

The sentencing comes a day after Seales's sons Ian, 28, from Raffery Road in Crossgar and Jason Weir, 27 from Comber Road in Carryduff were handed a combined 13 year sentence for the murder.

Mr Strickland was ambushed and shot in the leg in a yard on the Ballyglighorn Road, bundled into the back of his own car and driven a short distance to the Ballydrain Road before being shot in the face at point blank range.

Following Friday's sentencing his heartbroken mother said she was not happy with the terms imposed, she added: "It's not long enough.

"They can still get out, they can breathe, they can go to the gym in jail.

"My son can go nowhere and it's not right."

She continued: "The sentences are ridiculous, but I suppose the judge's hands are tied as to what he can do.

"Those who did this, they are evil, especially after the way they degraded my son.

"He came into the world perfect and they left him scarred.

"I didn't even have the chance to say cheerio. I didn't get the chance to see him.

"And they didn't have the decency to say sorry or to even show they were sorry.

"I will curse them forever."

Elizabeth paid tribute to her son and described him as a "big eejit".

"He wasn't perfect, nobody is," she said.

"But anyone will tell you he would have gave you his last pound and the shirt off his back.

"He was a good big lad and I will miss him."
