Police said trouble broke out in the Carlisle Circus area of the city on Monday night.

Around 100 loyalists gathered in Denmark Street where the van was hijacked.

"An uneasy stand-off ensued," UTV Reporter Judith Hill explained from the scene.

"The water cannon has been deployed and 6 AEP rounds have been fired by police," a PSNI spokesman said.

Petrol bombs, fireworks and other missiles have been thrown at officers in riot gear. Nine officers have been injured in the trouble, three of whom were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police Federation chairman Terry Spence said: "Their bravery and courage in stark contrast to that of the cowardly thugs responsible for trying to murder them."

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

Almost 50 officers were injured when violence broke out in the area on Sunday, following a planned republican parade.

The trouble flared after a loyalist crowd of up to 350 people gathered to protest at the march organised by a Republican Flute Band.

Police said there was "clearly orchestration" behind the disorder, and both sides were involved in the trouble.

Declan, your right . Let's start by getting rid of all tricolours and the green , white and gold bunting from this country , the only flags that should be allowed to fly is the british flag from all police and government buildings and in front gardens , just like the American flag is flown in America and any other country , be proud to be British . Fly the flag .

declan in omagh : i soooo agree with you put this charges in place for parades also there should be a charge for policing charge by the hour, that would get alot of people thinking IS IT WORTH MARCHING!!!

I agree with declan's point however this would be shot down by unionists in seconds. We need increased co-operation with each other off our own merit. Stop relying on politicians all the time, they can only do so much. Cross community schools and projects where one "side" can learn about "the other side". That would be better than throwing bricks at each other.
