A major air and sea search, launched after a passenger who boarded a Larne to Cairnryan ferry went missing, has been stood down.

Coastguards said it did not appear that the man had gone overboard, though rescuers have not been able to confirm one way or another.

The operation began on Friday morning when the passenger failed to disembark in Scotland, where the ship docked.

Clyde Coastguard in Scotland received a call for assistance at 10am after the person was reported missing from the P&O European Highlander ferry.

It is believed around 30 rescue personnel were involved in the search operation, including the Royal Navy rescue helicopter based in Prestwick, Stranraer and Portpatrick lifeboats and the coastguard in Belfast.

A statement from P&O Ferries said: "We can confirm that a passenger who was part of a coach party that boarded the 7.30am sailing from Larne to Cairnryan, on the European Highlander ferry, was reported missing on arrival in Cairnryan.

"P&O Ferries has conducted a search of the ship and is assisting authorities with their investigations as to the whereabouts of the passenger, including whether the person may have left the ship in a different vehicle."

The statement said as a standard procedure P&O Ferries also alerted the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said: "Potentially we have one person missing from a coach and we are currently making enquiries with the local Coastguard to ascertain the circumstances surrounding it."

So they still don't know of the man had went overboard I would really like to find out as I live so close to Cairnryan actually only 5mins away but it is worrying to know that a man may be have went overboard but It would be nice to know if he had just went into another vehical but still if he had why If he was with a Boat Party I just want to say I hope he is found.

where do you live brian? as you obviously dont know the size and scale of the irish sea and loch ryan plus the tempatures of them at this time of year. please remember 90% of the people involved in this search are VOLUNTEERS who are prepared to risk THEIR LIVES to try and find someone who is stupid enough not to rejoin their party!!

So obviously thousands of pounds of tax payers money not to mention man power and the anxiety his loved ones must have felt while ona fools errand searching for a man who clearly got drunk and fell asleep either on the boat in a corner or somewhere or better still stumbled on to another coach...yes the mans picture and name should be circulated. i for one would love to see the individual who wasted the money from the public purse.

So let me get this right........They cannot count for a man coming off the Ferry who did get on it?.......Possibility he went overboard?....After a few hours in th Irish Sea(Not a pond or river) they call off the search as he MAY have left on adifferent vehicle?......Im sorry but should they not be 100% certain before assuming that this man is safe and well?? God forbid anything happens to the man all because of the authorities assumption....

Well im no media expert , but wouldn't it be a good idea to circulate the mans name and picture... should it be on the local news or online news sites..and if anyone knows him and knows he is somewhere other than on a ferry they can tell the relevant authorities... it doesn't help us saying " a man has went missing".
