Global Rainbow will light up the skies above Newtownards and Strangford Lough as part of the countdown to the biggest sporting event in the world.

It was designed by American Artist Yvette Mattern and presented by Ards Borough Council and the Arts Council, and the switch was flicked on Wednesday evening.

The beam will be visible for miles from dusk until midnight until Saturday.

It signals 100 days to go to the opening of the London 2012 Festival in Northern Ireland, which will see some 14 cultural events happening across the region.

With hopes high for local athletes - the sky really is the limit.
