The schoolboys found what was thought to have been a revolver along with a balaclava in the Valley Park in Glengormley on Tuesday.
They made the find while working on a school forest project.
Their principal said the two boys were terrified when they made the discovery.
Nigel Arnold, principal of Glengormley Integrated Primary School, said: "We are very proud of the way these boys reacted.
"I am very glad that it was them and not another child who might have just thought it was a toy.
"Once they said to their teacher about it the authorities were immediately contacted.
"We have praised the lads for their actions - they actually thought they were in trouble about it."
It's understood there had been work in the area and the gun may have been disturbed during recent excavations.
Mr Arnold added: "The boys were just curious.
"For someone to bury this was very reckless, highly irresponsible and obviously illegal.
"It could have been potentially disastrous.
"But thankfully it is something very sinister taken out of our community."
A PSNI spokesman added: "A suspected firearm was found in the Valley Park area of Newtownabbey on Tuesday, 24 June.
"It has been taken away for forensic examination.
"Enquiries are continuing."
