Dale Moore has called on the terrorist organisation to say if the threat is genuine.
In recent weeks a number of senior Sinn Fein politicians have been told of death threats by loyalists.
An officer told Mr Moore the PSNI had intelligence indicating the Real IRA was looking to target him, a fortnight after Kieran Doherty was abducted and killed by the dissident organisation.
"Of course, I am taking it very serious. I am reviewing my security and will be taking any precautions necessary", Mr Moore told UTV.
"I'm calling on the Real IRA and 32 sovereignty movement to come out and declare if the threat is real and if it is they need to be explaining to the Irish people how shooting and targeting Irish republicans fits into their strategy of achieving a united Ireland."
The PSNI have said they will not comment on an individual's security but in a statement they said that if someone needs to review personal security then the police will take steps to help them.
