Robinson and McGuinness clash
First Minister Peter Robinson has hit out at comments by deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness who said the Orange Order had yet to make an effort to support a lasting peace.

Mr McGuinness warned that republicans could not be expected to permanently steward loyalist parades that passed through Catholic areas in the face of local opposition.

But Mr Robinson said republicans had contributed to parade tensions and called on Sinn Fein to promote a tolerance of loyal order parades.

"The comments by Martin McGuinness are an abdication of leadership by Sinn Fein on the parades issue," he said.

"His comments totally ignore the fact that Sinn Fein has a legacy of opposing and organising protests against loyal order parades right across Northern Ireland.

"The loyal orders are an integral part of our culture but there is intolerance towards parades by many in the nationalist and republican community."

On Sunday Mr McGuinness said that hundreds of Orange Order parades took place each year, but only a handful now caused controversy.

He said, the Order had to act to defuse tensions as other groups including republicans, loyalists and political parties had done during the peace process.

"The days of republicans stretching ourselves and our communities to maintain calm in the face of sectarian provocation cannot last forever," he said.

"It is time for the issue of contested parades to be dealt with once and for all."

But Mr Robinson said there was an intolerant attitude towards parades and he called for Sinn Fein to work against it.

Mr Robinson added: "As leader of the largest unionist Party in Northern Ireland, I am gravely concerned that there appears to be a backward movement by republicans with regard to parading.

"There will be other parades taking place within coming weeks and months.

"Sinn Fein must take on their mantle of leadership and maturity if Northern Ireland is not to be dragged into the past with further displays of violence and intolerance."

listen at the end of the day if the orangemen and unionists dont want trouble then y dont they just stop marching through nationalist areas , could you ever imagine republican bands marching through the shankill or sandy row or any other loyalist area for that matter ,fact is stop the parades through nationalist areas and there will be no trouble instead of constantly trying to force parades through. since they stopped the garvaghy road parade portadown as become a town that you can actually live in and walk around free without any worries , and it is obviously the same on the unionist side as is apparant in the support of the parade this past few years. unionist cant expect to get it all their on way they have to give and i aint seen them give anything. infact i aint seen the whole goverment do anything.

Stop the parades in Catholic areas it is that simple. Have the your "Orandefest" in your own areas and stop trying to shove it down our throats.

Of course its the shinners who are responsible for tensions at parades. They have spent a lot of time getting residents groups in place with the sole purpose of stopping parades. There is no tolerance with these people and therefore I say again that the shinners are not at Stormont for any other reason than to furthur a united ireland as far as they can with so called peaceful means and then when that is exhausted they will manufacture a crisis and leave Stormont. You wait and see, it's starting to unravel already

We need leadership, understanding, diversity. We have had orange halls attacked, had suffered throughout the troubles because each tribe could never give in to the other. Now those who tell the victims to forgive show leadership and stop the orange and green battles starting up again. You don't want the parades, think of those who have only that interest. Those who want to parade don't let not an inch be your cry or it could spoil what peace we have had. its very delicate at this time.

I'm sorry Mr Robinson but it isnt the Shinners that contribute to parade tensions, its the parade that does that; indeed it is Sinn Feins attitude to us the protestors and their willingness to Police your Orange marches that now has me voting for the SDLP
