Two men broke into the Whitewell Road property at around 12.30pm on Monday.
They were armed with a hatchet and what's believed to have been a gun.
The thieves threatened the man before throwing a towel over the head of his 27-year-old female companion and attacking him.
They then fled with a sum of money stolen from a purse.
Police said the man was taken to hospital for treatment on injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening, while the woman was left shaken but uninjured.
Anyone with more information has been asked to contact the PSNI.
