Motorists have been urged to take extreme caution on roads across Northern Ireland on Friday morning, due to risk of ice.

The Roads Service issued the alert following overnight temperatures of -1 degrees.

Parts of the network which are considered to be at risk have been salted, however there is potential for wash-off after rain showers.

A statement from the service said: "Further salting is underway this morning where considered necessary but there is still however the risk of ice on roads this morning.

"Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution when travelling this morning, particularly when driving on untreated roads."

The Met Office said the day will get off to a cold start with ice on untreated surfaces, with snow showers on hills over 250 meters high and some slush at lower levels.

Wintry showers will affect counties Antrim and Londonderry.

It comes as a period of chilly weather is forecast for the UK, as an Atlantic weather system pushes in from the west against cold weather in the east.

Experts say the conditions could potentially result in a dumping of snow during the weekend, with temperatures expected to drop to between -1C and -5C in northern parts on Friday night.
