Police said crowds gathered in the Deerpark Road and Alliance Avenue area on Sunday evening.

It is believed around 40 people were involved; however police could not confirm this number.

Officers are also investigating a report of criminal damage to a garden shed and to a car in the area in connection with the incident.

Sinn Féin Oldpark councillor Gerry McCabe said "nationalist and unionist homes and property" were targeted by the crowds.

He has slammed those behind the attacks at the north Belfast interface.

"Both attacks are unacceptable and cannot be justified. Everything possible must be done to ensure that residents can live free from sectarianism of any nature," he said.

"Those behind these attacks want to stoke up sectarian tensions, they must not succeed. Sectarianism must be challenged every time it manifests itself, and those responsible must be apprehended and brought before the courts."

Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed anything or who has any information to contact them at Tennent Street on 0845 600 8000.

This is a real dangerous spot. This is a mixed area and every year this is happening. It is started to hype the tension on both sides coming up to marching season.
