The blaze broke out in the kitchen of the Yoko Noodle Bar in the Riverside Park North area of the town at around 6.30pm on Friday.

The fire was able to take hold and spread to the roof space of the property before moving into the neighbouring Indus Valley Indian restaurant, the fire service said.

The Yoko, the Indus Valley and a number of other businesses in the area had to be evacuated.

Five fire appliances, including an aerial appliance, and 36 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze.

The crews battled to put out the blaze for almost three hours.

Late on Friday night they remained at the scene to ensure the fire could not re-ignite.

The Fire Service said the Yoko restaurant was "significantly damaged" in the incident, while the neighbouring business suffered smoke and water damage.

Group commander, Paul Coyle from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed there were no injuries.

He said: "To begin with it was challenging to get to the main seat of the fire, but we were soon able to bring it under control.

"While we know the fire broke out in the kitchen it is too early to say what caused it, but hopefully we will be able to determine that in our investigations.

"But I am happy to report there are not injuries."
