A number of homes were evacuated after a suspicious object was discovered at Altnacreeva Park on Wednesday night.

Police and army bomb squad officers were called and the area was sealed off amid investigations, but it turned out to be a hoax.

DUP MLA Nelson McCausland said two local councillors were the target.

"It is atrocious that a suspect device was left outside the home of Councillors Billy and Audrey Ball, forcing the late night evacuation of residents from their homes," he said.

"This is the third time in two weeks that residents in this vicinity have been evacuated from their homes due to the planting of suspicious devices.

"This madness must be brought to an end."

Residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly after 2.40am. All roads in the area have now been reopened.

Police have appealed for information on the incident.

A spokesperson said: "Detectives ask anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area or who has any information to contact them at Newtownabbey on 0845 600 8000."
