McKevitt was giving evidence at the Smithwick Tribunal in Dublin, which is investigating allegations of Garda collusion in the killings of two senior RUC officers over 20 years ago.

McKevitt was brought to the Special Criminal Court under Gardaí and army escort and appeared for just seven minutes on Monday morning.

He was asked several times if he had been tipped off by Gardaí about nine months after the killings about searches at his home.

McKevitt explained to the court his property was searched many times and that nothing had been found.

He also repeatedly denied having prior knowledge of them.

The tribunal had previously heard a phone tap on a prominent republican's house had picked up a voice telling him to get rid of a package.

Chief Superintendent Harry Breen and Superintendent Bob Buchanan died in an IRA ambush on their way back to Northern Ireland after a police meeting at Dundalk Garda station in March 1989.

McKevitt was found liable for the 1998 Omagh bombing and is serving a 20 sentence for directing terrorism.

He left court under armed guard to be returned to Portlaoise Prison after the hearing.
