The 44-year-old man was punched and kicked by a gang of four men and a woman in the Long Commons area of the Co Londonderry town on Tuesday at around 9pm.

He was in his kitchen with his wife and three-year-old daughter when they heard a commotion and the sound of breaking glass at the front of the property.

He went to investigate and upon confronting the gang, he was attacked.

Ruoyin Luo told UTV she found her husband John "holding his head and eyes and blood was running down everywhere."

"I kept screaming and screaming and tried to call the ambulance and police."

A neighbour, who came to the victim's aid with a wet towel, said he was "very shocked" that someone could be beaten "so viciously."

Ruoyin Luo said the ordeal has been "like a bad dream," before continuing: "I don't know if it was a racist attack or a random attack, but either way it's horrible, unimaginable."

Probably we will find a new house - that is the first step. Then we will see whether or not [we will] leave.

Ruoyin Luo

Her husband is being treated in hospital for concussion and face and head injuries.

David McClarty, Independent Unionist MLA for East Londonderry, said news of the attack left him feeling appalled.

"There's something sinister [about it] and hopefully police will get to the bottom of it."

He continued: "There's no place in society for such racist attacks and they have to be condemned by every right thinking person.

"It has to be condemned that any member of our community here in Coleraine should be attacked and certainly any member of our ethnic community.

"Chinese people are extremely well regarded in Coleraine - they're hard workers and they contribute so much to community life in Coleraine," he added.

Police would like anyone with information to get in touch.

I would like to think that, hardworking or not, we are accepted - not tolerated - regardless. As human beings, not as measures of how productive we are.

absolutely sickening. Something has to be done quickly to prevent these morons from shaming us any more

Apalling story! Totally disgusted that this poor man was targeted by morons because he was Chinese - to see his face is chilling with the injuries he has. Generally Chinese are very hard working people and contribute a great deal to N Ireland. I am mindful of the Chinese man being murdered in Carrick a number of years ago. Good 'Ol Norn Iron race hate capital of Europe! If we cant fight with each other we turn our attention to minorities living here. I hope this man makes a full recovery and the police / politations get real with general social problems in this country hurting the innocen and weak (animals included too!)

just wondering if the local community might arrange a march to protest against the continuing attacks east of the bann as they did in the heights recently.
