Queen to visit NI in late June

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will visit Northern Ireland later this month.

The Royals will hold a series of public engagements between Monday 23 and Wednesday 25 June, a statement from Buckingham Palace announced on Wednesday.It continued: "Further details of the visit will be published in due course".Theresa Villiers, Secretary of State for NI, said the visit will be an opportunity to put on show "the best that Northern Ireland has to offer" and the peace-building work that is being done."I am absolutely delighted that Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will visit Northern Ireland at the end of June," she continued."This will be a wonderful opportunity to show Her Majesty and His Royal Highness some of the best that Northern Ireland has to offer and demonstrate the work being done to bring different parts of the community together and build a more prosperous future."The Queen and Prince Phillip last visited NI in June 2012 as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.Her Majesty shook hands with Sinn Féin deputy First Minister, and former IRA commander, Martin McGuinness in what was seen as a symbolic gesture towards peace and reconciliation.It came after the Queen visited the Republic of Ireland in 2011 - and earlier this year she welcomed President Michael D Higgins as the first Irish head of state to make a state visit to Britain.First Minister Peter Robinson has welcomed the announcement of the June visit."I look forward to welcoming the Queen and the Duke to Northern Ireland and I know that once again this welcome will extend right across the community," said the DUP leader."The last visit during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations demonstrated beyond doubt the level of affection in which Her Majesty is held by people right across Northern Ireland."Meanwhile the Queen's Speech on Wednesday pledged to push for progress on NI matters.She said: "My government will continue to work with the devolved administration in Northern Ireland to rebalance the economy, promote reconciliation and create a shared future."
