Public 'wants end to double-jobbing'

There is public support for the ending of double-jobbing by politicians, a study has revealed.

Many of the small number who responded to a consultation by the Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) had no confidence in the political parties making it happen voluntarily.

PUP leader Dawn Purvis, who holds the party's only seat in the Assembly, is working on a private member's bill at the Northern Ireland Assembly.

It would prohibit members of local councils from also being members of the Northern Ireland Assembly. She launches the consultation report on Tuesday.

She is expected to say: "This is a serious problem. Double-jobbing is contributing to a crisis of confidence in the Assembly and the perception of politics for personal gain.

"It is my firm belief that ending double-jobbing is critical to the future of this Assembly.

"Northern Ireland's political leaders need to make a clear and unequivocal commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusion as daily operating principles for politics and decision-making in our province. Double-jobbing violates all of these."

There were a total of 40 responses to the party's consultation.

Northern Ireland has one of the highest rates of double-jobbing politicians in Europe.

At least 75% of Assembly members hold another elected position, with more than two-thirds of MLAs also serving as local councillors.

Only two of 18 MPs from Northern Ireland do not hold other elected posts.

Councils are a valuable blooding ground for young politicians. They are largely made up of part-timers who meet in the evening and who hold another day job.

MLA Alex Maskey told a committee of experts investigating the matter earlier this year that the relatively unsettled nature of Stormont has left Sinn Fein reluctant to separate its Assembly and Westminster candidates.
