The woman, who was in her 80s, was pushed over in the street by a man in the Upper Queen Street area, who snatched her bag. She suffered a fractured shoulder in the incident.

Passersby saw the man flee the scene and chased him.

He was detained by them until police arrived a short time later to arrest him on suspicion of robbery and assault.

The 22-year-old was charged by police on Sunday afternoon.

Investigating officer Constable Ferris said: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the public for their assistance in this matter and also to appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident and who has not yet spoken to police to contact officers at Musgrave on the non emergency number 101."

The victim received hospital treatment for her injury.

lets hope the judge see it that way and gives this piece of crap a nice long time in jail i would say about 5 years and make him do every day of it so the next person who trys this on a old lady knows what is in store for him its about time the courts show these people you break the law your doing time and make jail a jail and not a holiday camp its a joke when people who try and keep the law and have to watch others break it and get away with a small fine are a smack on the wrist and told dont do it again

Well done, another reason why this is such a lovely place to live. Now, if only the Judiciary use their authority to deter these Criminals by issuing deterrent sentences .... slaps on the wrist don't work ! ! !

Why GAK in Newcastle? Did you think Belfast is devoid of ANYONE who cares? Last time I was in Newcastle [the one where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea] had a wallet stolen but I expect there are one or two 'decent' people still living in Newcastle.
