Psychiatrist foung guilty of exposing himself
A London-based psychiatrist accused of masturbating in front of three women has been found guilty of exposing himself.

Dr Adekumle Yesufu was said to have performed the sexual act at the home of a former work colleague in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim.

Belfast Magistrates' Court heard the 39-year-old now faces being barred from practising following convictions for three counts of exposure.

One of the women told how she and her friends walked out of the Quayside apartment in embarrassment when he started to touch himself.

She said: "He was masturbating in front of me. He pulled the top of his jogging bottoms down, sitting across from me on the opposite sofa.

"He was looking directly at me."

Dr Yesufu, who denied the charges, was arrested at the scene when police were called on 13 August 2009.

The psychiatrist, from Sydenham Park, London, told the court he came to Northern Ireland to visit a woman he previously worked with at the Chelsea and Westminster Health Unit.

He claimed the pair had formed an intimate relationship, which had developed into kissing and touching, but never went as far as having sex.

Her account was that they had kissed on one occasion after a work night out in 2006.

According to Dr Yesufu they had a drink in the Crown Bar following his arrival in Belfast and then took a bottle of spirits back to her flat.

"When we got to the apartment she told me she had 'Js', that's what she called I think it was cannabis," he said.

"She said she had been smoking since she was 17 and mentioned some other people."

He claimed two of her friends then arrived and began a conversation which he found difficult to follow.

Asked by defence counsel Tracy Overing if he had exposed himself or masturbated, he replied: "No."

But when she questioned whether he had an erection under his clothes which may have been misconstrued, he said: "I might have."

He told a prosecuting lawyer he was "absolutely confused and frightened by the whole situation".

Dr Yesufu said he did not understand what was happening when the women returned and asked him to pick up his belongings.

He added: "It just didn't make any sense to me, and it still doesn't make sense."

But the prosecutor put it to him: "Isn't it the case that in a short period of time three girls were present and you masturbated in from of them and you did this to shock them and insult them?"

The psychiatrist stressed: "It's not the case."

Following his evidence, however, District Judge Ken Nixon found him guilty of three counts of intentionally exposing his genitals.

Mr Nixon adjourned sentencing until next month to allow reports to be prepared.

With Dr Yesufu granted continuing bail, Ms Overing told the court: "He is going to lose his job and is not going to be able to practice as a psychiatrist regardless of the sentence imposed on him."
