Elderly residents in the Workman Avenue area have said bricks and stones have been thrown, damaging their homes and cars on a number of occasions.

Around 100 local residents gathered at the peace-line near the Springfield Road on Tuesday evening to call for an end to the attacks.

Richard Russell, who is in his 80s, lives in the area and recently had his car damaged.

"They are throwing stones, bricks and bottles over the fence and it's smashing on top of our bungalows," he said.

"One went right over and smashed the windscreen on my car. At night-time you are lying thinking 'is it going happen again?'"

"It's very important that we come out here to show our protest about what is going on in this district."

Violet Andrews has also experienced trouble where she lives.

"We've had stones thrown over before. From when we moved in, it has been happening, but this past couple of nights it got worse.

"My next door neighbour got the worst of it, he actually got the windscreen of his car smashed, they were in bed at the time."

The 79-year-old resident called for engagement in the community to try and bring the incidents to an end.

She added: "We want to live in peace - we don't want any trouble."

Police have said they are investigating incidents of damage to a house and car in the area during the week and asked anyone with information to contact them at either Tennent Street Police Station or Grosvenor Road Police Station.
