Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness spent just over €300,000 on his bid to become Irish President last year.

Total expenditure figures for all seven candidates have been released by the Standards in Public Office Commission.

They reveal that Mr McGuinness, who polled third behind winner Michael D Higgins and second placed Sean Gallagher, spent a total of €302,563.

The figure includes money used on publicity, election posters, office and stationary, transport, market research, campaign workers and other election materials.

The Sinn Féin man was the second-lowest spender in the presidential race.

Meanwhile Fine Gael's Gay Mitchell was the biggest spender on €527,152 - he came fourth - while President Higgins spent a total of €359,935.

Independent candidate Mr Gallagher spent €323,318, while former Eurovision Song Contest winner Dana Rosemary Scallon was the lowest spender on €59,591.

The statutory spending limit for the election is capped at €750,000.
