Survivors of institutional abuse in Ireland were due to meet President Mary McAleese on Sunday.

Organisers say the meeting will be a step in the right direction in their fight for justice.

Around 300 people were expected to attend the afternoon meeting at Áras an Uachtaráin.

After the Ryan Report was published last month, President McAleese said the people responsible should face criminal charges over their offences, which were '"an atrocious betrayal of love" .

President McAleese said the injutsice they had suffered was compounded by the fact that the victims '"ad to suffer in silence for so long".

John Kelly of Irish Survivors of Child Abuse the planned meeting was significant.
