Arrangements are being made for the bodies of Cathy Dinsmore and Marion Elizabeth Graham - who were both in their 50s and from the Newry area - to be brought back to Northern Ireland following formal identification.

The bodies of the two friends, who were stabbed to death, were found in woods near the city of Izmir on Friday.

They were on holiday in the popular tourist resort of Kusadasi, about 75 miles from Izmir, with Ms Graham's 15-year-old daughter Shannon.

A teenager, who remains in custody in Turkey accused of the double murder, is expected to be charged.

The waiter, believed to be aged 17, allegedly killed the women after being told he couldn't marry Shannon.

Prayers were said for the two women and their families at churches in Izmir on Sunday.

Prayers were also offered for the victims and their relatives in Northern Ireland.

Many of the people attending the midday mass in Newry Cathedral also expressed their shock and sadness.

Raymond McGuinness, Ms Graham's ex-partner and the father of Shannon, arrived in Turkey, along with Ms Graham's son David, on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking briefly to reporters, Mr McGuinness said he hoped a flight back to Ireland could be arranged by the middle of the week.

We're going to arrange the flight home as soon as possible.

"We've identified the bodies and my main concern now is my daughter," Mr McGuinness said.

The two women travelled on Irish passports. They had been regular visitors to Kusadasi for years, staying in an apartment owned by Mr McGuinness.

Ms Dinsmore had been an employee of Newry and Mourne District Council. She also worked in a local cab firm up until last Christmas.

Her nephew, Robert Dinsmore, told UTV the family have been left devastated.

"(Cathy) was a wonderful aunt, a wonderful person and very popular, who loved life, who loved her holidays, who loved her friends," Robert said.

"Like thousands of others they went with the intention of having a good time, enjoying themselves, enjoying the weather and coming home. Sadly that wasn't to be."

Robert and his sister Ruby arrived in Turkey on Saturday evening.

It is understood the teenage Turkish waiter, known to the family as Alex, confessed to the killings after concocting a story the women had been kidnapped. It is thought he had also been involved in a separate row with Shannon's mother last week.

He is still being held at Izmir prison. It is believed the first full court hearing into the case could be held as early as Monday.

However, it is understood prosecutors are not convinced he is 17, as reported.

If he is older it would mean he would be treated as an adult, not a juvenile, if he was charged with the murders.

It is understood his father and a taxi driver were also arrested in connection with the double murder, but have since been released.
