Northern Ireland Electricity said the outage was caused by "generation problems in the island of Ireland" at around 3pm.

Comber was the worst hit area - customers there had no electricity for around an hour while engineers dealt with the problem in the system.

Supply has now been restored to all those affected.

A statement from an NIE spokesperson explained: "Around 45,000 customers in the Holywood, Comber, East Belfast, Dunmurry and Ards areas lost electricity supplies at 14:56 today due to generation problems in the island of Ireland.

"Electricity was restored to the majority of customers within 15 minutes. Around 4,500 homes and businesses in the Comber area had power restored by 15.56."
