There has been a tense stand-off between police and republican protestors in Belfast city centre.

Eirígí supporters gathered on the Falls Road just before 10am on Saturday and marched towards the city centre.

But, they were stopped by police on Castle Street.

The march was being held in protest against the first Armed Forces Day.

The national event held across the UK honoured existing service personnel and veterans.

Eirígí claimed their peaceful protest was made tense by a heavy riot police presence.

There were no arrests and the marchers dispersed peacefully.

Completely agree John. So much for the right to assemble.

They should have gone through the proper process as does everyone else to the parades commission

i was at the protest and the tactics fo police in riot gear was an utter disgrace and only managed to make the protest more tense. Thankfully éirigi supporters didn't raise to the low tactics of the PSNI.
