In the early hours of Sunday, gardaí reported the theft of a Toyota Celica car, with a northern registration plate, in Bridgened, Co Donegal.

Shortly before 4am, the car was spotted by the PSNI in the Caw Hill Park area of Derry.

"The car was reversed into a police vehicle, causing damage to the front grille," a PSNI spokesman said.

"When officers approached, the car was driven at them and it drove over an officer's foot.

"The police said the officer was not injured."

Police say the car then drove off toward the Limavady Road.

Police have appealed for information.
