A catastrophe could be caused by irresponsible people shining laser pens at aircraft flying into Belfast City Airport and blinding a pilot, police have warned.

The PSNI condemned those responsible and highlighted the dangers of using using laser pens, following renewed reports of them being shone at aircraft passing over parts of North Down on their way to touch-down at the airport.

There had been reports of such incidents in Conlig, on the A2 Bangor to Belfast carriageway and at Crawfordsburn beach.

A police spokesman said: "Not only is it an offence under the Air Navigation Order to endanger aircraft but it is highly irresponsible and dangerous.

"Lasers can cause temporary blindness, which, where pilots are concerned, can spell catastrophe."

There have also been a number of reports of lasers being shone through windows of houses in North Down and police said they wanted to remind people everyone of the potential dangers that could cause.
