A woman has been seriously sexually assaulted in Newry. Her friend was also physically hurt during the attack which took place near the courthouse on Saturday.

The pair in their 20's left a bar in Canal Street in the early hours and began walking.

Police said during their journey they were joined by a man who they didn't know.

He then forced the women into a small car park in the area of New Street, where he carried out the attacks.

Both women managed to get away and flagged down a passing motorist who alerted police.

The victims are now being supported by specially trained officers from the Rape Crime Unit.

The attacker is described as slim, tall, wearing light blue denim trousers and a black jacket.

Officers believe a number of people were in the area of Sugar Island and may have seen this man before the attack happened.

They are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
