A PSNI spokesperson said that the incident is being treated as attempted murder.

Detectives want to speak to anyone who was in the Springhill area of the Co Down town anytime between 6.45pm and 7.45pm.

It is understood that a personal protection weapon belonging to the officer was fired at the man's home at around 8pm but he was not injured. He did receive medical attention as a precaution.

It is not believed the murder bid is related to any terrorist activity.

Two men aged 45 and 52 who were arrested in connection with incident on Wednesday night have been released on police bail.
