Pipe bomb found in Derry alert

Police have confirmed that a pipe bomb was found in a security alert in Londonderry.

Army bomb officers were sent to the scene in the Eastway area of Derry on Thursday morning.A number of homes and businesses were evacuated for several hours during the alert, but everyone affected has since been allowed to return to their properties.The army carried out a controlled explosion on what police described as "a viable pipebomb device."It has been taken away for further examinations.Road closures in the area have been lifted.Earlier, Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly said the alert was causing widespread disruption in the Bogside and Creggan areas."This suspect device has caused serious disruption to people going to work, children going school or residents just trying to get on with their everyday lives."The people of Derry do not want this happening."These actions are wrong and counterproductive to anything that our community wants.He added: "Whoever is responsible for leaving this device needs to get off the backs of this community.''
