A house has been attacked with a pipe bomb in Shrigley, Co Down.

Police responded to a report of an explosion in the Martin Green area of the village on Thursday, shortly before 2am.

Army bomb experts were tasked and found that a device had partly exploded causing damage to the front door of the property.

A man and a woman along with their two adult sons were in the house at the time, but they were not injured.

Police have appealed for information or anyone who saw anything suspicious to contact them at Downpatrick station.

SDLP Ards councillor Joe Boyle has condemned those behind the attack.

"Shrigley is a very quiet area and a reckless attack like this is unusual and worrying. It's only through good fortune that no one was injured, and I really can't understand the mind set of people who engage in this type of activity.

"I would appeal to anyone with information about the attack to contact the police," he added.

Chris Hazzard, Sinn Féin's South Down MLA, said that a large number of young families with small children and any of them could have been harmed by this object.

"It is disgraceful that this type of incident has occurred in the area and my thoughts are with the people who were targeted by this act.

"This sort of behaviour is totally unwelcome and those responsible need to cease this type of activity immediately.

He continued: "I have talked to a number of residents this morning who are united in their condemnation of this incident in what is an otherwise extremely quiet and peaceful village."

Mr Hazzard urged viligance in the area, and for anyone with information to contact the police.

Local DUP councillor William Walker has also condemned those responsible, saying that these actions "have no place in society".
