A man, who spoke with a southern Irish accent, called at the 76-year-old's home in the Duncairn Gardens area of the city at around 10.30am on Tuesday.
She let him inside after the caller told the woman a pipe had been damaged and the water in the house needed to be checked.
As he worked at the sink, the elderly woman became suspicious and when she went up the stairs of the house two other men came running down.
The woman was not injured during the incident and it is not yet known if anything was stolen, however she was left badly shaken.
A black VW Passat with a Southern registration number plate was seen in the area shortly before this incident.
A police spokesperson said they believe the occupants of the car may have information that could help with their inquiries.
