A man has died after being knocked down by a car in Portadown, Co Armagh.

The incident happened on the Gilford Road in the town shortly before 2am on Sunday.

The victim, aged in his 40s, had exited a taxi a short time before he was hit by a Volkswagen Passat car.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who was travelling on the Gilford Road at the time of the collision to contact them.

Detectives can be contacted at Steeple Police Station or at Mahon Road Police Station on the new non-emergency number 101.

The road has been re-opened to traffic.
