It means the company, along with online auction site ebay, will have employed almost 1,900 people in the town by 2018.

The jobs boost also means that Paypal will have a total Irish workforce of 2,900 by 2018.

It is understood that recruitment for the English-speaking roles is to begin immediately.

Irish Minister of State Fergus O'Dowd said that it is fantastic news for the area.

"This is a huge phenomenal investment in the workers in Co Louth and in our community.

"It's very welcome indeed and also, they reckon 1'000 indirect jobs will be created in the region because of the presence of Paypal and ebay.

"It really is excellent, fantastic news for our local economy."
