The PSNI are investigating racist incidents in Belgravia Avenue and Wellesley Avenue that occurred last weekend.
At an anti-racism protest in the area on Monday, demonstrators came under attack from youths throwing missiles.
At one point protesters chased those who were throwing missiles at them.
PSNI Chief Inspector Robert Murdie said patrols are being stepped up in south Belfast in a bid to tackle the racist attacks.
He described the threats against Romanian families as ''abhorrent.'
Police are examining video footage of the attack on the demonstration.
They believe local people were involved but it was not part of an organised campaign.
A group of youths leaving a bar were heckle,d by those protesting against the disturbances and retaliated with bottles and Nazi salutes.
Police were called but the crowds dispersed peacefully.
Inspector Murdie said: "I feel that we all should be ashamed that such attacks are happening, not just in Belfast but right across Northern Ireland.
"It isn't isolated just to the Village area, unfortunately these attacks are happening right across Northern Ireland."
Nobody was injured on Monday night.
