The pair, both aged 26, were detained in north Belfast on Friday morning and taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning.
Ten shots from the military grade weapon hit two police cars which were towing digital signs through a residential area at the Ardoyne interface at around 7.10pm on Thursday, 5 December.
