Constable Philippa Reynolds, 27, was on routine patrol with two other officers, who sustained non serious injuries in the collision on the Limavady Road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two men, aged 25 and 23, have been charged with 14 offences in connection with the incident.

They are due at Derry Magistrates' Court on Monday morning.

The 25-year-old has been charged with 10 offences, including causing death by dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking causing death or grievous bodily injury, burglary and driving while unfit.

The 23-year-old has been charged with aggravated vehicle taking causing death or grievous bodily injury, burglary, criminal damage and assisting an offender.

The officers were attending an unrelated call when their unmarked police car was struck by a stolen silver Toyota Land Cruiser at approximately 3.40am. Two men fled the scene in the direction of Ebrington.

The 4x4 had run a red light and hit the police car side on between the driver's door and the passenger's door at the back where Constable Reynolds was sitting.

It is believed the young officer, who was from the Greater Belfast area, was killed instantly.

Constable Reynolds has been described as a beautiful, bubbly, friendly woman and an enthusiastic officer.

Paying tribute, PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said: "This is a personal tragedy for her family and also for the whole Police Service. She was out on duty, working to keep people safe, when she died. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time."

The Police Ombudsman has been informed of the fatal crash.
