It was reported to police that the memorial to three Scottish soldiers had been attacked on White Brae on Wednesday shortly after 4.10pm.

The incident is being treated as a hate crime by police.

The memorial to the soldiers, who were murdered by the IRA in March 1971, was paintbombed in June and July, and damaged on other occasions.

Sinn Féin councillor Gerry McCabe said those who have now attacked a memorial at White Brae in Ligoneil three times must stop.

The north Belfast councillor added: "This is now the third attack on this memorial since June of this year.

"It isn't hard to go up and empty road and put paint on a memorial. It doesn't take any amount of courage and it doesn't serve any purpose.

"Memorials from whatever background should not be targeted in this way.

"There is no room for this type of vandalism and these attacks must stop.

"The actions of those involved in this are not representative of the people of this community."

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

I've lived in Ligoniel all my life and I think it's about time that the morons who are destroying this mural by paint bombing would need to grow up! These young soldiers - two of them brothers - are at rest and what harm can them do to anybody? For the information for thee these people who carry these despicable acts out, the war is over and has been for a very long time. Relations are good in this part of North Belfast with both sides of our communities, for all that's good why do you grow up and stop these despicable acts, it gets nobody anywhere...

Absolute disgrace that this has happened again. I can only hope and pray those responsible are caught. I would like to hear sinn feins response to this. If it were an ira memorial I am sure they would comment.
