The warning about 58-year-old Kieran McLaughlin comes after a police operation in Donegal was stood down in the early hours of Saturday morning.
It is understood an armed Garda unit surrounded a house near the village of Burnfoot on Friday night. There were reports a helicopter and an ambulance were also at the scene.
The property was searched overnight before road blocks were lifted after it was believed to have been found empty.
"The operation was stood down at 4am and no arrests were made," a Garda spokesman said.
Burnfoot is only a short distance from Derry.
It is believed Gardaí are assisting the PSNI as part of the investigation into the murder of Barry McCrory.
PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Harrison said: "I can confirm there have been a number unconfirmed sightings of Mr McLaughlin in the Derry area but it is imperative that future sightings of Kieran are reported to police immediately and we reiterate to the public not to approach him, but to contact police on 999 if you think you know of his whereabouts.
"I would also emphasise to Kieran to contact police immediately as we are actively seeking to speak with you.
"It is our wish that this matter is resolved without further incident."
McLaughlin is described as being 5'7" tall, of medium build, with blue eyes and grey hair.
Mr McCrory, 35, was killed in a top-floor flat above a city centre cafe on Shipquay Street in Derry on Thursday morning.
He was gunned down while his partner was in another room.
The PSNI described his murder as a "brutal execution".
Members of the McCrory family took part in a two-minute silence held in the Guildhall Square in the city on Friday.
