She was walking in the Rathkyle area of the Stiles estate on Sunday when the attack happened.
The victim, who is in her 30s, was approached by a man between 6pm and 7.15pm who sexually assaulted her.
The attacker is described as being in his 20s or 30s, of muscular build and was wearing jeans and a sky blue Adidas hoodie.
Alliance Councillor for Antrim Neil Kelly expressed his shock at the attack.
"I am appalled at this horrific attack and my thoughts are with the victim at this difficult time," Cllr Kelly said.
"It is unacceptable that this attack was able to take place in early evening and I would urge anyone who may have seen something to come forward and contact the PSNI.
"Attacks like this send a wave of fear across the community and the perpetrator must be taken off our streets immediately and dealt with before the courts."
He added: "I would urge everyone in Antrim to remain vigilant and stay safe as it starts to get darker earlier by staying with friends or taking a taxi rather than walking alone."
Anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the attack or has any information has been asked to contact police.
