The pet, a Jack Russell, had been taken out of its kennel at Drumachose Park and hung up by its lead sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday at 7.30am.
The dead animal was discovered by its owner in the back garden.
Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson has condemned the killing.
The Upper Bann representative said she was "extremely angry" to learn that the family pet had been hanged.
She described the death as "another shocking example of the cruelty which some people display towards animals."
Ms Dobson was referring to an incident in August during which a dog was set on fire in Co Antrim.
There was widespread outrage when Cody the collie was set alight after being doused in flammable liquid in Maghaberry.
The family pet had to be put down days later after failing to recover from her injuries.
"I know that this latest incident in Limavady will provoke a similar outpouring of public anger and I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this incident and can help the Police to catch whoever was responsible, to come forward immediately," the UUP Agriculture spokesperson concluded.
The PSNI want anyone with information to contact them.
