The pet, a Jack Russell, had been taken out of its kennel at Drumachose Park and hung up by its lead sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday at 7.30am.

The dead animal was discovered by its owner in the back garden.

Ulster Unionist MLA Jo-Anne Dobson has condemned the killing.

The Upper Bann representative said she was "extremely angry" to learn that the family pet had been hanged.

She described the death as "another shocking example of the cruelty which some people display towards animals."

Ms Dobson was referring to an incident in August during which a dog was set on fire in Co Antrim.

There was widespread outrage when Cody the collie was set alight after being doused in flammable liquid in Maghaberry.

The family pet had to be put down days later after failing to recover from her injuries.

"I know that this latest incident in Limavady will provoke a similar outpouring of public anger and I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this incident and can help the Police to catch whoever was responsible, to come forward immediately," the UUP Agriculture spokesperson concluded.

The PSNI want anyone with information to contact them.

This is way more then anti social behaviour. Who ever did this is sick and twisted and should be locked away for the safety of the whole community. What kind of sick pleasure did these people get out of attacking an innocent dog who was unable to defend himself...no doubt they consider themselves to be some kind of heros. Well I have news for them, they are the worst kind of coward there is on this planet if they can resort to torturing an innocent animal to get their kicks. Somebody knows who these guys are, and if you have every cared for an animal then in the name of all that is decent come forward and name them before your pet is next. Shame on them.

The people that did this are nothin but disgusting human beings if you could even call them that a lot more needs to be done to the people that inflict harm on any animal instead of just a slap on the wrist.

Disgusted at this killing of a lovely little dog.The law needs to come down very heavy on the thugs who do this sort of thing, there is no real deterrant, that is why the thugs have no fear for their actions. It is just like the all to common beatings and stabbings of people here.No deterrant only a slap on the wrists.@Ptarmigan in Causeway what planet you from, it doesn`t make a blind bit of difference where a child is educated or grows up, they know right from wrong !

Yet another despicable act of cruelty. I feel more than sorry, I'm disgusted that such people can carry out such a deed. Anyone with any info should pass it straight to the police. Karma will catch up with them. RIP little doggy
